All through school public speaking scared the living hell out of me. Then, while taking classes at the local community college for bookkeeping, I had to take a speaking class. It was all about giving speeches. I forget the teachers name (sorry teach), but all in all he did a pretty good job. There seemed to be a lot of us that were apprehensive at first. Once we put out a couple of talks most of us were pretty good. He had told us one way to get over your fears was to make your audience laugh a little first. Everybody was relaxed and a little more comfortable then. I remember the second speech we were to give was about ourselves. What was our motivation for being in school. Who we were, what type of families we had, how many kids, etc…….anything and everything we felt might be of interest. The first thing you do is put your name on the board so everyone knows who is speaking. I told the teacher when it came to be my turn I was going to pretend to forget to write my name down. I asked him to give me a reminder. When he did that I pulled grabbed the marker, hesitated and then suddenly pulled out my wallet and looked at me license. It received mixed reviews, a couple of people were in disbelief, but mainly it got a lot of laughs. From then on I was pretty comfortable. I won’t to this day say I am completely fearless, but I think I can do alright. As long as I believe in what I am talking about.
